Evaluate 2 – Rubrics and Competencies

Create: For this section, set up a competency structure using standards for one unit of your sample course. Associate the assignments in that unit with the competency.

Post in your blog: A screenshot of the standards-based competency structure and a detailed explanation of why you created the structure that way.
The structure of the below rubric was to allow for a review of the unit’s concepts–relating specifically to Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. The entire unit covered graphic design principles, elements of art and Adobe Illustrator use. This final lesson covered all tools and concepts covered up to this point. It’s structured in a way to tie in how to use all tools plus use the creative iteration skills practiced.

Excerpt on the right: Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Career and Technical Education guidelines for Arts, Audio/Video Technology and Communications. The rubric on the left was created to meet the specific guidelines. The unit covered use of Adobe Illustrator, including technical skills and it’s use in conjunction with other software; design principles, art elements and art history. The unit provides the student with experience and skill-building that aids in career development, plus focuses on fundamental standards/employability skills.

Include a discussion of the various pathways a student may go through to attain the competencies in the unit.

Students will be given multiple opportunities to learn, demonstrate and apply relevant technical and academic skills in-context as they demonstrate occupational tasks as well as multiple methods to reach their final project. Various learning assets are available for students to access including phone apps, online games and worksheets to achieve success in the lesson and units. The various pathways a student may go through to attain the competencies in the unit include the option to submit work in a variety of formats (i.e. an audio/video file versus a hard copy, delivering a presentation in person versus creating a Powerpoint or Prezi deck). Students are also given the option to take different classes to reach the competencies (i.e. Animation, Audio/Video, Digital Design, etc.).
