Navigate Reflection

Consider the following standards:

(from iNACOL, the International Association for Online Learning, publishes Standards for Quality Online Teaching)

  • Standard B: The online teacher understands and is able to use a range of technologies, both existing and emerging, that effectively support student learning and engagement in the online environment.
  • Standard I: The online teacher demonstrates competency in using data from assessments and other data sources to modify content and to guide student learning.
  • Standard K: The online teacher arranges media and content to help students and teachers transfer knowledge most effectively in the online environment.

How has the Navigate module prepared you to meet each standard?  Specifically address the standards listed above and link to or provide specific examples from your work in Navigate.

The Navigate module helped prepare me to meet standards B, I, and K for Quality Online Teaching such as learning about:

  1. What strategies will you take away from the Navigate module and apply to your teaching? The strategies I learned from this module include how to utilize the robust features of the various LMS set-ups, specifically how to use access various access tools for grading and assessment.
  2. What lessons were most beneficial for you? Although all sections were informative, I found the screen cast section particularly useful and started using it in my current class immediately. It was surprising how easy and fun it was to create files and the possibilities are endless with its use. It is helpful in showing techniques or doing reviews for students that have been absent in on-site classes or for convenience in online classes.

With Standard B,the Navigate module reinforced my knowledge of technologies involving types asynchronous and synchronous learning along with LMSs and SISs. Learning about the types of online learning enabled me to consider how to facilitate and structure a class. The reference material helped with tools and trends in LMSs and SISs.

Regarding Standard I, there are numerous resources and tools that an online teacher facilitator can access in using data to drive instruction and guide student learning. The specific videos within the modules from D2L were insightful in showing what the teacher or facilitators side of the data would look like in an SIS.

Standard K was challenging and the decision-making aspect of it was problematic. There are so many LMS options and researching the features became daunting. I went with Blackboard since I presently use it with my classes. Once I obtained a free trial, the set-up of the class was straight-forward, with easy drag and drop features. On a basic level the comparison of open-source vs. commercial sites was beneficial in understanding the benefits and drawbacks of each.
