Participate 2- Accessing Digital Learning Communities

Post in your blog: Describe the results of researching your level of access to digital resources.  Then answer the following questions:

1. What types of barriers might impede students’ opportunities to access digital learning?

  • Access to high-speed internet if living in an area of low-band width
  • Families below the poverty line do not have home access to high-speed internet.
  • Accessible web design for those with disabilities

2. What might we do to eliminate such barriers?

Technology availability:

  • Provide extra opportunities for technology and internet access
  • Advocate for more resources in your district or school
  • Educators could apply for grants or seek alternative funding to purchase broadband hotspots to loan to students
  • Shrink the “digital divide” between households that can and cannot afford internet access
  • Teachers can diagnose the needs of the students and make adjustments accordingly. Teachers need to be cognizant of how their students and families interact with technology and make lesson accommodations for students without home access.

Regarding Implementing Web Accessibility:
Using The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, (WCAG), web developers can apply accessible design including:
Caption and/or provide transcripts for media
Provide headers for data tables
Provide appropriate alternate text
Allow users to skip repetitive elements on the page
