Emerging technology will continue to improve all aspects of digital learning. This applies to gamification and augmented reality in particular. Both are extremely popular and can be useful for various learning styles, grade levels, ages, subjects and platforms. In classes I’m currently taking, the incorporation of online games, quizzes or practice exercises helps me retain information and makes the experience more enjoyable. It serves as a welcome break from the typical workbook or hard copy assignments.

How do you foresee this trend impacting online learning?
This impacts online learning by helping to break the content into smaller pieces and providing a big convenience factor in a learning module, specifically making it available on multiple connected platforms. Digital learning solutions that apply a variety of tools and modalities will continue to increase in popularity.

Will this trend be a learning fad or will it become an essential part of online learning in the future?
This doesn’t appear to be a learning fad since technology continues to improve and more easily accessible. It is essential as methods, processes and technology improves, so do the expectations of the learner.
